The glossary contains terms and acronyms that are used in this document.
Active Mode Duration
The minimum amount of time that an Intermittently Connected Device must stay in Active mode.
Active Mode Threshold
The minimum amount of time that an Intermittently Connected Device must stay in Active mode after the last network activity.
Certificate-Authenticated Session Establishment (CASE)
A Matter process for session establishment where both nodes own Node Operational Certificates that chain back to the same root of trust.

Check-In Protocol (CIP)
A protocol used by an Intermittently Connected Device to notify the client device that it is available for communication.
CIP uses sessionless messages that rely on a message counter and a unique key that is periodically rotated.

Coordinated Sampled Listening (CSL)
A protocol used in Thread® to
synchronize communication slots between an SSED and the parent device.

Development Kit (DK)
A hardware development platform used for application development.

Device Firmware Update (DFU)
A mechanism for upgrading the firmware of a device.

Fast Polling
An interval that determines the fastest frequency at which an Intermittently Connected Device receives messages in Active mode.
Idle Mode Duration
The maximum amount of time that an Intermittently Connected Device can spend in Idle mode.
Intermittently Connected Device (ICD)
A Matter device that is unreachable in the network for periods of time and utilizes the Matter functionalities of an ICD Management cluster to optimize its network traffic, reachability, and power consumption.

Long Idle Time (LIT)
An Intermittently Connected Device with a Slow Polling interval longer than 15 seconds.
Typically cannot respond in a timely manner, so usually initiates communication.
LIT
Matter accessory
A node in the Matter network and a role within the Matter development environment. The
accessory is formed by the physical device and by the application running Matter stack that
is programmed onto the device. A Matter controller pairs the accessory to a Matter network
and controls it remotely.
Matter controller
A node in the Matter network and a role within the Matter development environment. The
controller device is used to pair and control the Matter accessory device remotely over a
network, interacting with it using and the regular IPv6
communication. One of the available Matter controller implementations is the CHIP
Tool.
Mesh Link Establishment (MLE)
A protocol used by Thread® to configure links and disseminate information about the network to Thread devices.

Over-the-Air (OTA)
Refers to any type of wireless transmission. For Matter, OTA is synonymous with the
Over-the-Air software update mechanism.

Short Idle Time (SIT)
An Intermittently Connected Device with a Slow Polling interval of 15 seconds or less.
Can respond with relatively small latency, so usually does not initiate communication.

Sleepy End Device (SED)
An energy-optimized Thread®
device type based on the polling communication mechanism.

An interval that determines the fastest frequency at which an Intermittently Connected Device receives messages in Idle mode.
Stay Active Request
An optional command that the client device can send to an Intermittently Connected Device to request it stay in Active mode for at least a given amount of time.

An energy-optimized Thread®
device type based on the CSL communication protocol.

System on Chip (SoC)
A microchip that integrates all the necessary electronic circuits and components of a
computer or other electronic systems on a single integrated circuit.

Thread Border Router
A specific type of Border Router device that provides connectivity from the IEEE
802.15.4 network to adjacent networks on other physical layers (such as Wi-Fi® or Ethernet). Border Routers
provide services for devices within the IEEE 802.15.4 network, including routing services
for off-network operations.

User Active Mode Trigger (UAT)
A functionality that allows an Intermittently Connected Device to become immediately responsive by putting itself into Active mode, allowing a user to manually trigger active mode to, for example, reconfigure the device.
