How Nordic MCP works

Nordic MCP

To start a workflow, complete these steps:

  1. Connect Nordic MCP to your MCP client.
  2. Sign in with myNordic.
  3. Describe the intended outcome, project requirements, target device, and preferred nRF Connect SDK version.

Nordic MCP and the AI assistant then perform these actions:

  1. The AI assistant checks the operating system, available client tools, installed nRF Connect SDK versions, and current project environment.
  2. Nordic MCP classifies the goal as Setup or Development and selects the ordered guidance for that phase.
  3. The AI assistant searches the skill library and asks for approval before installing any required skills.
  4. The AI assistant selects the appropriate extension tools, Nordic MCP tools, installed skills, or command-line alternatives.
  5. The AI assistant follows the plan and asks before hardware-affecting actions. It prepares a handoff when the next phase requires a fresh chat.

For example, begin a project that spans both phases with a Setup request:

Use Nordic MCP to create a freestanding application called ble-temp-switcher using the nRF Connect SDK v3.4.0.

Target nrf54l15dk/nrf54l15/cpuapp. Scaffold the project and run a verification build, then stop.
Do not implement application features or program the device.
Prepare a concise handoff for a fresh chat for Development.

After Setup succeeds, start a fresh chat to implement, build, program, and test the application. See Learn from example requests for the complete paired request and more realistic use cases.

You normally do not need to invoke individual MCP tools. If your client does not apply Nordic MCP's server instructions automatically, use the nordicsemi prompt or tool once as the entry point.
